They may also include the obligation to construct maintain and repair dykes, ditches, canals and other works, but there is no precise definition of “manorial rights”.

  • The Chancel

    What is a Chancel? The Chancel is the bit of the church near to the alter, which houses the clergy and the choir. When Henry VIII disbanded the monasteries and sold off their land, the liability to repair the chancel remained with that land and passed to the purchasers of that land. As land was sold off in parts, each part became equally responsible for the cost of repairs, which means that the Church only needs to find one owner and whack them with the bill.

    The Derbyshire Telegraph has recently reported that one of the oldest buildings in Derby failed to sell at a recent auction. “Jacobean House”, a 17th century commercial building failed to meet its reserve, with bids petering out at £310,000. Perhaps one of the reasons that it failed to sell, is that it is allegedly tenanted by as many as 14 ghosts, who are said to haunt the former town house.
