SDLT relief for multiple residential purchases

On 31 March 2011 the UK government published the first version of the Finance Bill 2011, which included the provisions for multiple residence purchase relief from Stamp Duty Land Tax. 

In this article Richard Lloyd considers the new relief, which will fix the rate of SDLT by reference to the average consideration for multiple purchases of dwellings rather than the aggregate consideration.

 
 
Automatic transfer of private drainage systems in England & Wales

Where properties are connected to the mains drainage system for water and drainage the responsibility for repairing and maintaining those supplies lies with the utility companies.

For most properties the cost of repairing and maintaining the pipelines falls onto the property owner or owners where the property shares the use of the private system.

Michael Morris considers proposed legislation placed before parliament at the end of April 2011 which altered this position. 

 
 
Supreme Court rules against house disguised as a barn

It's not looking good for the castle disguised as a hay bale!

The Supreme Court has delivered its unanimous judgment that Alan Beesley, who built a barn on green belt land, is not entitled to planning permission for the three bedroom house hidden inside of it. Michael Morris considers the case.
