What is a moot?
A moot (short for moot court) is a simulated court proceeding used in legal education. It’s a dynamic way to build confidence, sharpen your public speaking and develop critical thinking and writing skills.
.. and the Collas Crill Moot?
The Collas Crill Moot is an annual inter-school competition that sees students competing against each other in a moot court setting. We have been running the Moot for almost two decades in Guernsey, introduced the competition in Jersey in 2024 and a couple of years later in the Cayman Islands.
The Moot competition runs from September to December (January in Cayman) and includes:
- training sessions led by Collas Crill legal professionals
- three rounds of Moot competitions
- a final showdown between the top two teams, leading to the much-coveted Moot title
A different legal case is argued during each round of the Moot and teams are marked by the Judges against various criteria. Collas Crill lawyers train the students throughout the programme on a wide range of aspects from legal argument and research to court etiquette and body language.

How to get involved
Year 12 students in Guernsey and Jersey and year 11 students in Cayman are invited to take part each September via in-school promotion.
