Who we look for

We take great pride in our training programme, having trained lawyers to qualify as English solicitors for many years. Finding the right people for our programme is vital.

Academic credentials are obviously important, but equally we want people to join us who embody our values. People who are easy to do business with, who challenge the 'traditional' and look to do things better. We are quick to recognise your talents and will provide you with an environment in which those talents can be utilised to their maximum potential.

The effectiveness of our training scheme is demonstrated by the fact that we have current partners who completed their training contracts at Collas Crill and have remained with us for the duration of their careers. Our aim is to ensure that, by the end of your training contract, through the high quality training that you will have received, you will be a competent and confident newly qualified solicitor with a genuine enthusiasm for your work. 

We are keen to consider candidates who are looking to qualify through all routes, including the LPC and SQE.

We recruit trainees each year and welcome expressions of interest at any stage.

Our recruitment process for the training programme usually begins in December of the previous year. Please look out for adverts on our vacancies page at that time.

What the training contract involves

The training contract lasts two years. As a trainee, you would be posted to at least four different teams around the firm – these are known as ‘seats’ and each seat lasts up to six months. We will work with you to understand the areas of law that you are particularly interested in, and will try to help you get the seats that best match your career aspirations. Our priority though is to make sure you receive the balanced training that you need to qualify as a lawyer.

At the start of each seat, you’ll be assigned a supervisor who is responsible for mentoring you, and for providing training and feedback on how you are doing. You will be actively encouraged to become a valuable member of each department from the outset, drafting documents, doing research and attending client meetings.

You will be assigned a 'buddy' from day 1, a qualified lawyer and someone who has most likely trained and qualified at Collas Crill. They will be on hand to answer your questions and provide you with pastoral support throughout the programme. As well as technical legal training, we provide you with the skills you need to succeed commercially, including presenting, negotiating, workload management, business development, client relationship management and networking.

Our aim is to recruit trainee solicitors who will become our future lawyers and progress to partnership. Over the years, the majority of our trainees have stayed with us following qualification. We look for people who can add value to our firm as they develop. Bursaries

Who we look for

We offer a number of bursaries to students from both Guernsey and Jersey. If you are a Channel Islands resident and thinking of pursuing a career in law, we can assist you financially with your studies as well as providing support and work experience opportunities.

If you wish to apply for a bursary, you aren't limited to taking a law degree. We consider the intention to become a lawyer rather than the degree course being followed. Alternatively, we also support postgraduate studies with a law content.

In addition to our academic requirements, we are looking for students who possess the attributes that embody Collas Crill. Strong communication skills and drive are key qualities that we look for.

What the bursary award covers

The bursary award covers the duration of your relevant studies and will be made up of:

• A financial contribution, paid in three instalments in the academic year
• Vouchers to assist you with buying academic books
• Preferential consideration for work placements at Collas Crill
• Careers advice from partners and other lawyers
• Four weeks' paid work experience per academic year.

Articled Clerk

What we offer

Our Articles of Clerkship programme is designed to develop the legal practice and professional skills of those who want to become a lawyer.

The programme is run in our Cayman office and lasts for eighteen months. Under the guidance of the training principal, the Articled Clerk gains both contentious and non-contentious experience across commercial and corporate law, investment funds and dispute resolution as well as getting exposure to our other departments such as fiduciary and property. The Articled Clerk is supported by Partners and Senior Associates and is encouraged to have as much hands-on experience and direct client contact as possible.

Candidates must be Caymanian with an excellent academic record, having obtained a 2:1 in their undergraduate degree and passed their PPC or equivalent qualification.

Guernsey

Vacation Scheme

In August 2023 we ran our inaugural Collas Crill Vacation Scheme in Guernsey. Aimed at A-Level and university students the week long programme is a fantastic opportunity to gain work experience and shadow industry professionals.

From introductions to our the practice areas and business services teams, presentations from some of our key clients, to a conveyancing site visit with our Guernsey property team, the chance to observe Court proceedings, virtual meetings with our colleagues in our Jersey and Caribbean offices, joining some of our Next Gen lawyers for coffees with clients, as well as taking part in Corporate Social Responsibility activities, the week provides students with a fully immersive experience of life as a lawyer at Collas Crill.

Not only is the Vacation Scheme of real value to the students' development and CV, it allows us a firm to embed and grow relationships with the future trainees and lawyers.

Legal Scholarship Scheme

The Collas Crill Legal Scholarship Programme in Cayman is supporting the next generation of forward-thinking lawyers by providing financial assistance of up to KYD$12,000 to one young Caymanian per year interested in pursuing a career in law. 

What the Scholarship Programme covers

• A financial contribution, paid annually in three instalments
• Careers advice from partners and other lawyers
• Four weeks’ paid work experience per academic year

Terms & Conditions

Applicants:

• must be Caymanian / possess Caymanian status
• must have accepted an offer or are already enrolled to study law at a recognised Commonwealth college or university
• must be able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement

In addition to our academic requirements, we are looking for students who possess the attributes that embody Collas Crill. Strong communication skills and drive are key qualities that we look for.

At the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, applicants may pursue other scholarships.

Summer Internship Programme

Your summer with Collas Crill 

Collas Crill’s Summer Internship Programme invites students to spend four weeks navigating and learning about the inner workings of a law firm Guided closely by lawyers and business services professionals, you will work your way through each department on a rotational basis.

You can expect to:

• Gain exposure to a range of different legal practice areas: Insolvency and Corporate Disputes, Private Client and Trusts, Financial Services and Regulatory, and Real Estate
• Understand the role of business services within a law firm: Marketing, Business Development, Finance, Compliance, HR
• Contribute to the overall culture of Collas Crill and participate fully in all work and social aspects
• Start building your professional network with a view to your future career development
