Leading lawyers discuss directors' duties

Leading risk and regulatory lawyers from Collas Crill in Guernsey and Jersey will be hosting a conference in each island on directors' duties and risk, joined by two prominent commercial barristers from the UK.

James Purchas and Nick Vineall QC of 4 Pump Court will be joining Collas Crill to share their expertise in conflicts, regulation and insurance issues at the half-day events.

In Guernsey, Wayne Atkinson, Michael Adkins and Nin Ritchie will be speaking while Jersey will see Danny Le Maistre, Fiona Wilson and Simon Hurry share their expertise.

Taking place on Tuesday 23 April in Jersey and Wednesday 25 April in Guernsey, the conferences will cover important topical and practical issues for directors, senior managers and senior compliance professionals working in the islands' regulated financial services businesses.

The Collas Crill teams, made up of key lawyers from the commercial and dispute resolution practice areas, will run interaction sessions on the key issues and pitfalls that businesses face.

Nick, a silk who recently had success acting for the FCA in the Court of Appeal in Burns v The Financial Conduct Authority [2017], will focus on the liabilities of directors, including non-executive directors, from a regulatory angle.

James, a leading junior who is regularly instructed on heavy offshore matters in the Channel Islands, will consider what D&O insurance is and how it works in practice, with a focus on some of the key recurring policy coverage issues and their potential impact for those in the offshore world.

Wayne said: "Directors' duties, and the risk associated with them, is a constantly evolving beast as regulation continues to increase and new legislation is put in place.

"Both James and Nick are highly regarded barristers in their field and actively involved in regulatory developments so it will be great to have them join us, discussing some of the key issues for our industry.

"Also, our interactive sessions have proved inviable for our clients to contextualize the possible issues directors face and the options available to them so we're excited to once again bring this to a wider audience."

The conference, priced at £80, will take place from 8.30am, closing at 12.15pm on both days.
